Frequently Asked Questions
QUESTION: What is a Design/Build Project?
Design/Build is an innovative approach to construction. Traditional phases of construction project include:
1. Preliminary Planning and Engineering (design)
2. Selection of a Construction Contractor (bid)
3. Project Construction (build)
The design/build process combines stages 1 & 3 (design & build). With this process engineers prepare the design while construction is proceeding. Using the design/build process as opposed to a traditional construction approach generally results in shorter construction times and lessened traffic impacts. Design/Build is anticipated to shorten construction time by maximum of 2 years for this project.
QUESTION: What are the Project Boundaries?
The project involves the widening of I-85 from south of the US 29-NC 49 Connector in Mecklenburg County to SR 2894 (Speedway/Concord Mills Boulevard) in Cabarrus County, a distance of Approximately 8.3 miles (13.4 kilometers).
QUESTION: Will Construction Affect Traffic?
During Construction, the Design Builder has developed detailed traffic control plans and construction phasing plans. Significant construction activities that disrupt traffic will be performed during off peak hours, when possible. The Design Builder has commited to have four lanes open (two in each direction) at all times during construction. Existing ramps and lanes of the traffic interchanges will remain open.
QUESTION: What is an Auxiliary Lane?
An auxiliary lane is a continuous lane from an entrance ramp to the next exit ramp to improve traffic merging.
QUESTION: What is the Duration of the Project?
The project will be constructed in three sections. The description of each phase and their durations are as follows:
Northern Section: Future I-485, north of Speedway Blvd. Duration- 2-11-03 to 5-20-04
Middle Section: From City Blvd. Interchange to Future I-485. Duration- 3-26-03 to 12-13-04
Southern Section: From West of US 29/49 Connector to City Boulevard Interchange. Duration- 4-01-03 to 12-13-04
