Artist rendering of 46 foot traffic shift at mile marker 49, which is scheduled to occur in early October. Southbound traffic will be switched over towards the northbound side. This is to allow crews to build southbound lanes.
What are those "baskets" around mile markers 48 and 49? They are called concrete baskets, and they are driven into the new pavement to secure the 14" of concrete that will make the new road.
Blythe Construction's bridge crews begin work on new Mallard Creek Bridge.
A compact footprint has been incorporated in the I-85 Widening design. This means that the highway will be built from inside the median, instead of widening out from the shoulders. This saves time, money and environmental resources such as trees.

A remote control devise called a Ramax Roller is used to compact soil (small machine top photo). 14H Motorgrater (machine at top photo right, and foreground of bottom photo) uses a Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) system to level the ground for paving.
Crews lay dirt as filler before leveling and paving.
Filler dirt is leveled by a machine called a sheep's foot roller.
Blythe Construction employee Teresa Hensley operates a smooth drum roller in the middle section.
Crews mix concrete with dirt to prepare the area for beginning stages of paving.
